Just like athletes, leaders can benefit from coaching. In sports the role of the coach is to help the athlete improv, guides the athlete to find ways of improving strength, speed, competency, courage, and to become more competitive. The right coach can take an athlete from talented to superstar.
An executive coach does the same thing. We help the leader, guiding them to become an effective leader, finding ways of improving business relationships, and helping the leader to create the life they want. We can help you to manage fear, expand boundaries, develop new skills, and achieve the life you truly want. The goal for any coach should always be whatever is in your best interest.
In the past, companies hired executive coaches to help fix broken leaders.
Nowadays, most companies hire coaches as a way to invest in their top executives and high performers.
Not everyone is a good fit for coaching. Coaching is an investment and, most companies have limited resources, allocating those resources into leaders that ultimately bring value to the company holds the greatest “Impact on Business”. The leader must be open minded and willing to change. If the leader isn’t motivated to grow, coaching simply won’t work.
One of the most important elements of coaching is the employee’s willingness to receive feedback and be willing to work with the coach on constructive ways to use that feedback for improvement. Leaders who are resistant to feedback and prefer role of victim will never change.
- Initial meeting between coach and the contact. Discussion is focused on the leaders behaviors.
- The coach, contact and leader all meet. This is the opportunity is so all parties understand the reason for coaching, as well as coming to an agreement of what the true issues are.
- Coach and leader will meet 6 times either face to face or via the internet. Each meeting will be 1 hour long. The Sherpa process will be followed.
- After meetings, the coach, contact and leader will again meet to discuss progress as well as any new issues that may of arised.
- The coach and leader will meet for 6 more meetings.
- The coach, client and leader will meet again after the 12th meeting as a wrap up.
Absolutely, in fact that is one of the reasons hiring a coach returns a positive “Impact on Business”. Honesty is important, confidentiality helps promote honesty. A coach is non judgmental of the leaders issues. Human resources and bosses often feel like they can coach internally, success in these situations is rare. Leaders are fearful to open up as the feel their behaviors will be held against them in the future.
Positive skills + Positive behaviors = Positive Impact on Business.
Your skills have taken you to the level that you are at, your behaviors are what is keeping you from moving forward.
Impact on business is a simple equation, it’s what you do. When a leader creates positive behavior changes, there is a definite effect on the organization’s results.
